Worcester County Ground

The Worcestershire County Cricket ground was the place that held the clubs first games playing in front of the cricket pavilion this was the instigation of the clubs name.

In 1899 Cricket club members formed The County Ground Bowling club and the members were only accepted from cricket club members. The club eventually opened up the members selection to Gentlemen not fully members and the club grew from strength to strength.
1919 a balance sheet shows a donation given by the Cricket club of £25 to form the WBA.
The club joined the County association in 1931 and in 1937 moved to Cripplegate park.(The new Corporation greens)

Powick Club

Formally called Powick Hospital Bowling Club .
1961 the Powick club was formed, by the staff of the Hospital at Powick near Worcester.
The games were played in the Hospital grounds and very often watched by some of the patients.

The Hospital closed in 1983 and was transferred to the other side of Worcester to Ronkswood.
The club moved to the Cinderella grounds in Worcester, Cinderella being a shoe factory on Worcester city outskirts (St.Johns). The club shared the Cinderella greens with Kay’s bowling club who had been at the Cinderella ground for some time, the Powick hospital club dropped the name Hospital from their title and remained with the Kay’s club for twelve months.
Moving to Corporation greens in Cripplegate park by the New road Worcester opposite the County cricket ground the club enjoyed twenty years and well established itself, and later was part of the Consortium of other six clubs that formed the Consortium of Cripplegate bowlers club.
All the facilities over the past twenty years to-date have been restored and managed by Peter and Pat Stokes who are also the trustees of the Consortium.

In the 1950's, Worcester City Council employees were playing on a green at Perdiswell, which coincidentally, later became the site of the indoor bowls pavilion. After that pavilion was burned down, there was a move to Cripplegate Park, and in 1960, a little bowls club was formed, with a big title - "The National Association of Local Government Officers Worcester City Branch, Sports and Social Club Bowls Section".

Apart from a short move next door to The Hylton Club in the early 90's, until this became a nightclub, NALGO BC continued its modest existence at Cripplegate Park, but changed names, firstly to UNISON BC, and in 2004 to GROSVENOR BC, recognizing that few Union members were active Bowlers, and that most members lived in the St.Johns area and used The Grosvenor Inn regularly.

GROSVENOR BC became a member of the Consortium of Cripplegate Bowlers, helping to improve the greens, (no longer maintained by Worcester City Council,) that now provide some of the best bowling surfaces in the County.

Success on the greens has been limited, with the undoubted highlight being the 1999 Vernon Turner Cup Runners-up spot.

The Sons of rest bowling club
The Rotary club of Worcester in 1937 created a social club for working men who had retired, A club house was built on Cripplegate park and this pavillion was officially opened in that year by the Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire. The idea was for the retired to meet in the club for tea and biscuits, play cards, Dominoes and maintain a comrade atmosphere.
Now a few years later about 1962 a bowls club was formed and Ladies were accepted into the club.
The club joined the Consortium Cripplegate Bowlers in 2004.
In the year of 2002 the Worcester City Council (UK) claimed that they could no longer afford to fund the upkeep of the municipal bowling greens at Cripplegate park, the greens were sadly allowed to deteriorate, seeing this demise a small group of dedicated people decided to come to the rescue of the greens.
They were Peter and his wife Pat Stokes, Peter Wood, Alan Sier and John Cambridge.
The year 2003 they took over the responsibility of the park greens from the City Council and started to rejuvinate the greens (all three rinks) to what are now absolutely first class standards.
They formed a consortium of the bowling clubs that used the greens and called them the Consortium Cripplegate Bowlers.
During 2004 a full negotiating team from the consortium managed to obtain a lease from the City Council for a Five year lease. They then took on full responability of the greens and the surrounding areas.
